We all take the necessary precautions to help prevent us from harm. Locking our front doors at night, cooking our food completely and having working smoke detectors are all things that can keep us safe. But sometimes (actually, quite often), the best defense against harm is our furry friends.
A great example of this is when a fire breaks out in the middle of the night, like what happened to New York native Kathie Hefkta. Somehow, a fire broke out in her house while she was sleeping. The fire wasn’t big enough to set off the smoke alarms, but it was still bad news. She was woken up by Sophia, her German Shepherd puppy. According to Hefkta, Sophia “…started crying, she did something unusual. She started banging her crate. She’s never done that before.” Miss Hefkta knew something was wrong and when she went to go check on Sophia, she noticed there was a a small fire by her front door. Luckily, she was able to get her and her little hero out before the fire got out of control.
Hero German Shepherd. Just like Sophia!
I don’t know about you, but animals never cease to amaze me. How did Sophia know that fire was dangerous? How did she know her owner would come downstairs if she started banging the crate? Where was her cape and super suit? We may never know! All we need to know is that Sophia and her owner are safe, and that even though Sophia is only a puppy, she is already a hero!
